PgCert / PgDip / MSc in Local and Regional Economic Development

Overview

The Local and Regional Economic Development (LRED) programme is a part-time, distance learning programme in economic development.  The programme aims to develop the skills and knowledge expected of an economic development practitioner.  Eligibility for entry requires an appropriate university degree or relevant work experience.  The Programme is open to both UK and international applicants.  If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good command of the English language (at least a level of 6.5 LETS).

This part-time, distance learning programme allows a fluid learning experience, without the need to take substantial time away from employment or frequent travel.  A flexible, modular approach allows Coventry University and the other participating universities to focus on their strengths, which gives the LRED programme an additional advantage over programmes based at a single institution.  The programme will provide you with skills and knowledge of the theory and practice of economic development.

Qualifications

The programme is recognised and accredited by the leading professional body for economic development practitioners – the Institute of Economic Development (IED).

The Local and Regional Economic Development programme offers three levels of qualification:

Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) – You will cover three core modules covering benchmark themes in economic development:

  • Theory, dynamics and processes
  • Governance, policies and strategies
  • Operational practice

Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) – You will complete three (of four) in-depth modules including:

  • Labour market analysis and policies
  • Working with communities or Development appraisal and impact analysis
  • Applied research methods and management

Masters of Science Degree (MSc)

  • 15,000 words dissertation on a key topic

Achievement of the Postgraduate Certificate qualifies you for full membership of the IED (you will be able to use the designation of MIED).

Delivery

The programme is managed and delivered by the Economic Development Distance Learning Consortium (EDDLC).  The EDDLC involves Coventry, Dundee and Sheffield Hallam universities, in collaboration with the Institute of Economic Development Educational Trust. The programme is registered and regulated by the University of Dundee – the University of Dundee thus awards all qualifications.

Fees

The fees for each module are £800 plus VAT.
