Dr. Ying Xie

Control Theory and Applications Centre

After completing my MSc study at the University of Liverpool, I started a PhD in Control Theory and Application Centre (CTAC) at Coventry University in 2000.

My research topic was Supply Chain Management in the Presence of Uncertainties, which was sponsored by an EPSRC grant. I was supervised by Dr. Dobrila Petroivc and Prof. Keith Burnham from the Faculty of Engineering and Computing.

Studying in CTAC for three years was one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life, and I have made significant achievements not only in the research area but also in my personal life. CTAC gave me such a stimulating and friendly working environment where I could communicate with other research staff and students for research questions and novel ideas. CTAC also gave me an opportunity to get to know people from all over the world by doing research together.

The EPSRC grant provided good opportunities to go abroad and to attend international conferences and workshops, which helped improve my presentation skills, broaden my knowledge and foster research collaboration by communicating with researchers from worldwide academic organisations. Supervision under Dr.Dobrila Petrovic and Prof. Keith Burnham was strict but stimulating, which encouraged me to complete the PhD study on time with good content.

I started working at the University of Greenwich directly after completing my PhD in 2003, where I am currently a senior lecturer, which I attribute to the good learning and communication skills gained from my study at Coventry University. The part-time teaching experiences accumulated at Coventry University also helped me to get used to a working environment quickly and become more competitive.
