Taken from the Research Fortnightly power measure which calculates a GPA using 4* = 16, 3* = 9, 2*= 4, 1* = 1 and U = 0 then multiplies it by the volume of full-time equivalent staff (FTE).

Taken from the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) the ranking is based on the average score of quality across the institution (GPA) but excludes very small specialist institutions.

The ranking is based on Percentage of Staff Submitted multiplied by the GPA, multiplied by Number of Staff Submitted, multiplied by the Number of UoA Submitted by the institution divided by Total Number of UoA.
