We would like to wish all our colleagues, friends and website visitors a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

It is the Year of the Dragon! "The Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. ... People respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind – which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy. ... This Chinese New Year 2012 ushers in the Water Dragon. Water exerts a calming influence on the Dragon’s innate fire." (http://chinesenewyear2012.net/)

The Contemporary China Applied Research Group (CARG) acts as a hub bringing together staff and students from a wide range of disciplines who are actively engaged in research on China. The Group is located within the Faculty of Business, Environment and Society. CARG members are drawn from the Politics, International Relations, Global Security, Peace and Reconciliation, Business, Law and Languages.

Established in 2010, CARG builds on its highly successful 2009 China Forum, a university-wide collaborative conference involving over 80 research staff and students on Coventry University’s research on China and links with Chinese universities and institutes.

Research activities

The Research Group holds an annual series of research seminars profiling the research of individual staff and students as well as invited speakers from other organisations, an Annual Lecture, coordinates and facilitates inter-disciplinary collaborative research links and external grant capture, provides advisory support for postgraduate students and promotes externally the work being undertaken within the Faculty and the wider University.

In line with the University’s approach to research, CARG’s focus is on ‘applied’ research with a policy orientation. As a new research group, CARG is building on Coventry’s University’s existing extensive partnerships and relationships with Chinese universities and research institutes and is developing working relations with other UK, European and wider international centres of Chinese studies.
