Biomolecular Sciences Applied Research Group

The Biomolecular Sciences Applied Research Group at Coventry University has international reputation and encompasses translating research for human health. Researchers within this group undertake pre-clinical and clinical based projects investigating the suitability, safety, toxicology and effectiveness of existing and conceptual therapies.

Research areas within this theme include infectious diseases (HIV and malaria), albinism and other major diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes/obesity. Current cross-sectoral, multidisciplinary applied, pedagogical and commercial research combines the diverse efforts — for example in environment, society and health, population genetics and molecular medical sciences — to achieve the overall objective: enhanced health improvement encompassing disease diagnosis and prevention.

The group's expertise and interests include:

  • Infection control and diagnosis: malaria, HIV/AIDS and microbial / viral pathogenicity

  • Preclinical and clinical assay development: enzyme immunoassays, bioassays, sensor and assay design and statistics

  • Molecular medical sciences: haemoglobinopathies

  • Drug discovery and development: therapies / safety assay development for cancer and heart disease

  • Population genetics and epidemiology: genetic predisposition to albinism / diabetes and diabetic nephropathy and diabetes

  • Pedagogical research and CPD associated with biomedical science
