Joseph worked as a volunteer photographer, cameraman and designer in Bhopal, India

I travelled to Bhopal, India as a volunteer for, ASA (Action for Social Advancement). The placement was for two months and was a great opportunity for me to travel, work abroad and do what I love doing best - taking pictures.

On the placement I learned about rural development issues and was exposed to solutions addressing these concerns. My skills in design and fine art photography allowed me to contribute to by producing communication materials for ASA.

I love capturing moments and experiencing different cultures, and India was a place that challenged me to convey my appreciation for the beauty of life in India through the camera lens - producing photographic, film and graphic design material for the NGO.

I was sent on regular assignments to villages and towns where I had to travel via train or sometimes by bus to get to my destination and start producing the work.

In the first week I was taught basic Hindi and had a thorough orientation of my projects and assignments with ASA as well as the NGO and their work. I was also given information about the country and city of Bhopal itself. I was taught about the people, culture and history of India, as well as other interesting facts and general information. The placement has been an education which I have found very valuable and a beneficial experience for the future.

It was a privilege to become a photographer for the NGO. My India experience has fuelled my confidence and motivation to pursue my interests and aspirations in photojournalism, travel and documentary photography.
