African Studies Centre

The African Studies Centre is a transdisciplinary centre that began 16 years ago . It has established a reputation amongst Africanist scholars as one of the most effective and productive African research centres in the UK.
Some of its associates are known nationally and worldwide for their expertise.
What sort of research do they do?
The centre works in collaborative partnerships with research councils, government, civil society, business, and individuals and their communities, to find solutions to the problems that African people face in their everyday lives.
It has been engaged in developing new systems, policies and strategies that address issues such as:
- Insecurity
- Abuse of human rights
- Corruption
- Forced displacement
- An inequitable global economic system
- Under-development
- Weak states
- Climate change
- Bad governance
In addition its research team contribute to the teaching of African studies within Coventry university and supervise PhD students.
There are 20 research associates in the African Studies Centre drawn from the fields of:
- Geography
- History
- Politics
- Media studies
- Human security
- Development studies
- Peace studies

The Director is Professor Bruce Baker who is well known for his work on African policing.
