Vehicle Studies

Work in this area makes use of computer simulation to investigate problems in areas of predictive engineering concerning vehicle handling and automotive safety.

Projects make use of industry standard software including MSC.ADAMS (Automotive Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) for vehicle handling simulation and MADYMO for crash and impact studies.
Pedestrian impact simulationPedestrian impact simulation

All work is being carried out in collaboration with industry. Past and current partners include:

  • Jaguar
  • Rover Group
  • Daewoo
  • Dunlop Tyres
  • Lucas Varity
  • Mira
  • TNO
  • Siemens Restraint Systems GmbH.

The main areas of activity include vehicle and tyre modelling strategies, ABS modelling and simulation of crash, pedestrian impact, airbag deployment and vehicle rollover.

The technology is readily transferable and has lead to a European FP6 Helisafe TA project concerning helicopter occupant protection and an aircraft tyre modelling project with Airbus.
