Performing Arts Degree Show 2011

Students and Staff at Coventry University Performing Arts are delighted to welcome you to SPECTRUM. This festival of third year performance projects celebrates the huge range of imagination and talent of its final year students between May 9th and June 3rd 2011. The festival launch on May 5th showcases a selection of dance, music and theatre performances, both live and on film, to give you a taste of what will be happening in the weeks to come.

The work you will see is informed by an ethos of creative freedom, imagination and collaboration. Students are encouraged to engage with historically important ideas and performance works and explore them in their practical studies to discover their own personal interests, voice and creativity. Shakespeare stands alongside devised dance pieces on contemporary themes. Electronica, wind quartets and Speakeasy Jazz coexist with Noel Coward, Led Zeppelin tributes and schools dance projects. Soulful poetry with comedy and tragedy.

This prodigious range of work is derived from the balance between individual creativity and collaboration that is fostered within our department. It is also a tribute to the commitment of students and staff to their art forms. Performances in the Ellen Terry building utilise the high quality performances spaces on offer, others engage with the building as an artistic site and some take place in venues throughout Coventry and beyond. All benefit from the skills and expertise of our dedicated technical staff.

The performing arts at Coventry and in the UK as a whole are dynamic and popular, giving pleasure and meaning to millions of people daily. Despite the challenges that current economic and political trends offer for the arts we hope that the SPECTRUM festival illustrates the strength, diversity and permanence of these art forms in Coventry University and within the life of the country as a whole.
