CEUC 2010 Conference

Conference of European University Chaplains

Peace, Reconciliation and Social Justice
Coventry, United Kingdom
14–18 June 2010

A warm welcome awaits you at Coventry

Coventry is the city of ‘peace and reconciliation’ and is twinned with Dresden. Coventry is the eighth largest city in the UK and its reinvention through the ages is reflected not just in its symbol of renewal – the Phoenix – but also in the city itself where medieval buildings sit alongside those reflecting its 21st century commitment to enterprise and rejuvenation.

This is most compellingly illustrated by the co-location of the ruins of Coventry Cathedral and the new Cathedral which is a living testament to the principle of peace and reconciliation globally. It is a student city located in the heart of England with its own rich history and cultural traditions – both indigenous and assimilated. It is easy to get to by road, rail and air and easy to get around. We're only one hour from London by train and 20 minutes from Birmingham.

Your host university

Coventry is an evolving and innovative university with a growing reputation for excellence in education.  Independent surveys show that we provide a caring and supportive environment, enriched by a unique blend of academic expertise and practical experience.  The University has a globally recognised reputation for - employability, enterprise and entrepreneurship – the three elements that set us apart from other universities and essential elements of a civil and cohesive society. Coventry University was 'Highly Commended' in the Entrepreneurial University of the Year category at the Times Higher Awards 2008.  The appointment of a Pro-Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation has seen the launch of a series of initiatives to make Coventry a global, modern university.

The theme of the 2010 conference falls naturally under the topic of ‘Peace, Reconciliation and Social Justice’ and the long history of the city, Coventry Cathedral and the University in addressing these issues will contribute enormously to this topic.  The topics will help us explore the role of the university chaplain in a changing higher education where there is a growing internationalisation focus.  It will help us to explore ways of dialogue where the chaplain is the ‘bridge builder’ and the ‘reconciler’.  Therefore, the main contributors to this conference are:

Conference attractions

The conference is attracting some internationally-renowned keynote speakers on the theme of peace, reconciliation and social justice.

There will be an opportunity for delegates to achieve an optional certificate in conflict resolution, during the conference - this is a great asset for any chaplain.

While engaging with the theory and practice of peace, reconciliation and social justice we will take a trip to the National Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire.

The evening timetable promises meals and experiences to tantalise your taste buds and your imagination.   We will meet the Mayor of Coventry, have our traditional European market in the medieval Guild hall, experience a traditional English roast and dine in style for the final formal dinner. We will also have a medieval banquet at Warwick Castle.  If you wish, you can hire a medieval costume for the banquet and you can do this at costumes2u.co.uk and we’ll arrange the collection of your costume.
